There is some serious football talent in the Palmetto State right now, and the 2027 class is another reminder that you don’t have to leave South Carolina to find big-time players.

My current Top 10:

  1. Jaiden Bryant, EDGE — Irmo
  2. David Segarra, RB — Byrnes
  3. Seth Tillman, DL — South Pointe
  4. Amare Patterson, WR — Bluffton
  5. Nate Carson, OT — Irmo
  6. Trey Wimbley, WR — D.W. Daniel
  7. Aidyn Wiggins, CB — Byrnes
  8. Jaiden Kelly-Murray, WR — Oceanside Collegiate
  9. Chanin Harris, WR — Byrnes
  10. Dennis Glenn Jr., DL — Boiling Springs

A couple of things jump out at me immediately.

First, Byrnes has three players in the Top 10. That tells you something about the level of talent coming through Duncan right now.

Second, look at the diversity of positions. Edge rusher, running back, defensive line, offensive tackle, cornerback and four receivers. This isn’t a class built around one position group.

And Jaiden Bryant sitting at No. 1 is interesting. At 6-3½ and 245 pounds, he already has the kind of frame you’re looking for coming off the edge, and he’s considered one of the better prospects nationally.

I’ve evaluated South Carolina high school football players for a long time, and one thing hasn’t changed: this state produces football players far beyond what its population would suggest.

Over the next few weeks I’m going to take a closer look at these guys individually — not just stars and recruiting rankings, but what I see on film and how I think their games translate to the next level.

That’s the fun part for me.

The evaluation.
