Friday Night Football: Conference Battles, Desperation and Opportunity
By James Baxter
There is something special about college football under the Friday night lights. Maybe it’s the atmosphere. Maybe it’s the anticipation of another big weekend of football. Or maybe it’s simply knowing that, for a few hours, we can forget everything else and enjoy the greatest game in America.
Tonight’s schedule doesn’t feature any heavyweight Top 25 showdowns, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some interesting storylines worth watching.
In fact, the most entertaining games aren’t always the ones featuring nationally ranked teams. Sometimes they’re the games involving programs desperately trying to turn their seasons around.
Let’s take a look at tonight’s action.
⭐ GAME OF THE NIGHT
BAYLOR AT UCF
7:30 PM ET | ESPN
This is easily my choice for the most intriguing matchup of the evening.
Both teams enter at 4-3, and both understand the importance of gaining momentum as we move into the final stretch of the regular season.
For Baylor, the challenge is establishing offensive consistency while avoiding the mistakes that can turn a competitive road game into a frustrating loss.
UCF has the advantage of playing in Orlando, where the environment can become difficult for visiting teams when the Knights establish momentum.
The matchup I’m particularly interested in is Baylor’s ability to handle UCF’s defensive pressure.
If the Bears protect their quarterback and establish a balanced offensive attack, they have an opportunity to control the tempo.
However, if UCF forces Baylor into obvious passing situations and creates negative plays, the advantage swings toward the Knights.
JB’S TAKE: I expect this to be the most competitive game of the night. Both teams have something to prove, and neither can afford to give away possessions.
MY PICK: UCF
I give the Knights a slight advantage because they’re playing at home, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this one comes down to the final possession.
🌊 TULANE AT CHARLOTTE
7:00 PM ET | ESPN2
Tulane enters at 3-4, while Charlotte is struggling through a 1-6 season.
On paper, this looks like an opportunity for Tulane to get back to .500.
But road games against struggling conference opponents can become dangerous when a team starts believing the outcome has already been decided.
Charlotte has very little margin for error. The 49ers need to find some offensive consistency and avoid putting their defense in difficult situations.
For Tulane, this is about establishing control early.
Run the football, protect possession and don’t give Charlotte opportunities to hang around.
The longer this remains competitive, the more confidence Charlotte will develop.
JB’S TAKE: Tulane is the better team, but the Green Wave haven’t been consistent enough for me to consider this an automatic victory.
MY PICK: TULANE
I expect Tulane to establish control in the second half and pull away.
🌙 KENT STATE AT SACRAMENTO STATE
10:30 PM ET | ESPN2
For those of us who enjoy late-night college football, here’s your nightcap.
Kent State enters at 3-5, while Sacramento State is sitting at 1-7.
Neither program is having the season it envisioned, but that doesn’t make this game meaningless.
Quite the opposite.
These are the kinds of games where you learn something about a team’s character.
When championship dreams have disappeared and postseason opportunities are slipping away, how hard are you willing to compete?
For Kent State, this represents an opportunity to build some positive momentum.
For Sacramento State, playing at home offers another opportunity to give its fans something to celebrate.
JB’S TAKE: Kent State has the edge in my assessment, but late-night road games can produce some strange outcomes.
MY PICK: KENT STATE
I like the Golden Flashes to make enough plays offensively to escape with a victory.
🏈 IVY LEAGUE SPOTLIGHT
HARVARD AT DARTMOUTH
7:00 PM ET | ESPNU
Let’s not overlook this one.
While much of the national attention focuses on the transfer portal, NIL money and playoff expansion, Ivy League football offers a different perspective on the college game.
Harvard and Dartmouth bring tradition and conference pride into this Friday night matchup.
This is the kind of football that deserves more attention than it receives.
I’ll be particularly interested in the battle along the line of scrimmage and which team can establish the more physical running game.
🔥 JB’S FINAL THOUGHTS
Friday night’s schedule might not be loaded with nationally ranked programs, but there are still some compelling reasons to watch.
Baylor and UCF have an opportunity to improve their position in the Big 12.
Tulane is trying to get its season back on track.
Kent State and Sacramento State are looking for something positive to build upon.
And Harvard and Dartmouth remind us that college football has traditions that extend far beyond the enormous television contracts and multimillion-dollar athletic budgets.
My game of the night is Baylor at UCF, and I believe the Knights have just enough of an advantage at home to pull out a close victory.
Enjoy the games, everybody.
It’s Friday Night Lights, and there’s football to be played!
