THE DUKES HAVE EVERYTHING TO LOSE
There are games that determine conference championships, and there are games that can determine whether a team gets an opportunity to compete for a national championship.
For James Madison, Thursday night’s trip to Boone, North Carolina, might be both.
The Dukes enter this Sun Belt Conference showdown undefeated at 7-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play. They’re one of just six remaining unbeaten teams in the FBS and the only undefeated program among the Group of Six conferences.
More importantly, James Madison has positioned itself as a serious contender for a College Football Playoff invitation.
But there’s a problem.
Appalachian State doesn’t particularly care about James Madison’s playoff aspirations.
And the Mountaineers have a history of ruining somebody else’s season.
JAMES MADISON: MORE THAN JUST A GOOD RECORD
First-year head coach Billy Napier has the Dukes playing some impressive football.
James Madison enters Thursday’s contest averaging 42.9 points per game, ranking third nationally in scoring offense.
Defensively, the Dukes are allowing just 16 points per contest.
That’s an impressive combination regardless of conference affiliation.
What I particularly like about James Madison is its ability to establish the running game.
Running back George Pettaway has already accumulated 767 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. He’s averaging more than 100 yards per game and has produced four consecutive 100-yard performances.
The Dukes are averaging nearly 224 rushing yards per contest.
That kind of offensive balance becomes especially important when playing on the road in a hostile environment.
Quarterbacks Camden Coleman and JC Evans have also given Napier some flexibility offensively.
James Madison doesn’t necessarily need spectacular quarterback play to win football games. It needs efficiency, ball security, and the ability to capitalize on opportunities.
Defensively, the Dukes have forced 12 turnovers and recorded 18 sacks.
Those are numbers that suggest a football team capable of controlling games rather than simply outscoring opponents.
APPALACHIAN STATE: THE DANGEROUS UNDERDOG
Appalachian State enters the contest at 4-2 overall and 1-1 in Sun Belt competition.
The Mountaineers are coming off an impressive comeback victory over Coastal Carolina, overcoming a 10-point halftime deficit to win 35-32.
That victory demonstrated something important.
This football team isn’t going to roll over when facing adversity.
Under second-year head coach Dowell Loggains, Appalachian State has shown flashes of offensive explosiveness.
Quarterbacks Malachi Singleton and Henry Hasselbeck have both contributed, although Singleton has been dealing with an injury.
Hasselbeck provides an interesting dimension because of his mobility.
Against Coastal Carolina, he rushed for 125 yards while helping engineer the second-half comeback.
Running back Jaquari Lewis scored four rushing touchdowns in that victory.
The Mountaineers generated 516 yards of total offense.
That’s the kind of offensive production that should concern James Madison.
And let’s not forget something else.
Appalachian State has one of the most passionate fan bases outside the Power Four conferences.
A sold-out Kidd Brewer Stadium on a Thursday night is not an easy place to play.
THE MATCHUP THAT COULD DECIDE THIS GAME
James Madison’s rushing attack against Appalachian State’s defensive front.
This is where I believe the Dukes have their biggest advantage.
Pettaway has been outstanding, and James Madison’s ability to control the line of scrimmage could dictate the tempo of this football game.
If the Dukes establish their ground game early, they’ll force Appalachian State to commit additional defenders near the line of scrimmage.
That opens opportunities in the passing game.
However, there’s another matchup worth watching.
Appalachian State’s quarterbacks against the James Madison secondary.
While the Dukes have been excellent defensively in terms of points allowed, they’ve surrendered approximately 236 passing yards per game.
That tells me there may be opportunities for Appalachian State to create explosive plays through the air.
If the Mountaineers can protect their quarterbacks and avoid obvious passing situations, they could make this a very interesting football game.
THE PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS
This is where things become particularly interesting.
James Madison reached the College Football Playoff last season, becoming the first Sun Belt program to accomplish that feat.
Now the Dukes have an opportunity to return.
But their margin for error is extremely small.
Unlike a traditional national championship contender from the SEC or Big Ten, James Madison probably doesn’t have the luxury of absorbing a conference loss and remaining firmly in the playoff conversation.
The Dukes need to keep winning.
And they need to continue building a résumé that separates them from the other Group of Six contenders.
Boise State is currently receiving more support in both major national polls, despite James Madison’s undefeated record.
That makes every remaining game important.
A convincing victory over Appalachian State would strengthen the Dukes’ argument.
A narrow victory keeps their hopes alive.
A loss could prove devastating.
And that’s what makes Thursday night’s contest so compelling.
JB’S KEYS TO THE GAME
1. Establish the running game.
James Madison needs to get Pettaway involved early. If the Dukes can consistently generate four or five yards on first down, they’ll control the offensive tempo.
2. Contain the Appalachian State quarterbacks.
Hasselbeck’s ability to extend plays with his legs could create problems. James Madison must maintain defensive discipline and prevent explosive quarterback runs.
3. Win the turnover battle.
The Dukes have been outstanding at creating turnovers. They cannot afford to give Appalachian State additional possessions in a hostile environment.
4. Survive the first quarter.
Appalachian State will be emotionally charged. James Madison needs to withstand that initial surge and avoid allowing the crowd to become a major factor.
5. Finish drives with touchdowns.
Field goals may not be enough if Appalachian State finds offensive rhythm. James Madison must capitalize when it reaches the red zone.
JB’S PREDICTION
I believe James Madison is the better football team.
The Dukes are more balanced offensively, more consistent defensively, and have demonstrated the ability to win away from home.
But I’m not expecting a walkover.
Appalachian State has enough offensive weapons to create problems, particularly if the Mountaineers can establish some success running the football.
I also believe the environment in Boone will be a factor, especially early.
Ultimately, James Madison’s rushing attack and ability to create turnovers should prove decisive.
JB’S PICK: JAMES MADISON 34, APPALACHIAN STATE 24
THE BOTTOM LINE
James Madison is playing for something bigger than another Sun Belt victory.
The Dukes are playing for an opportunity to prove that a program outside college football’s traditional power structure belongs on the national championship stage.
But here’s something I’ve learned from watching and evaluating college football for decades.
The most dangerous opponent isn’t always the most talented team on your schedule.
Sometimes it’s the team with absolutely nothing to lose, playing in front of a hostile home crowd, with an opportunity to ruin somebody else’s dream.
That’s Appalachian State on Thursday night.
And James Madison had better be ready.
