Halloween Weekend | October 31, 2026
By Jim Baxter | JB Talking Sportz
We’re approaching November, and the Atlantic Coast Conference continues to be one of the more unpredictable leagues in college football.
Miami remains undefeated and sits atop the national rankings, but beyond the Hurricanes, there are plenty of questions surrounding the conference.
Wake Forest has emerged as one of the biggest surprises in the country, SMU continues to compete at a high level, and several traditional conference powers are struggling to find their footing.
Clemson and Florida State are perfect examples.
Two programs accustomed to competing for conference championships are now fighting to salvage disappointing seasons.
And this weekend, they’ll face each other in Tallahassee.
Let’s take a look at the ACC schedule.
NO. 19 SMU AT SYRACUSE
Noon ET | ESPN2
This is a potentially dangerous game for SMU.
Syracuse is coming off an emotional overtime victory over North Carolina, and playing inside the JMA Wireless Dome presents a unique challenge.
SMU has been one of the more consistent teams in the conference, but the Mustangs cannot afford to overlook Syracuse.
I believe SMU has the advantage in overall offensive personnel, particularly when it comes to creating explosive plays.
The key will be protecting the football and avoiding unnecessary mistakes.
Syracuse is capable of making this a four-quarter contest, but I expect SMU to make enough plays offensively to escape with a victory.
JB’S PREDICTION: SMU 31, SYRACUSE 24
CALIFORNIA AT NC STATE
Noon ET | ACC Network
NC State returns home after a difficult trip to Stanford, and I believe the Wolfpack will be determined to respond.
California has been inconsistent this season, but the Golden Bears have enough offensive talent to create problems.
The biggest question for NC State is whether it can establish some consistency along the offensive line.
I expect the Wolfpack to emphasize its running game and attempt to control possession.
California will have opportunities to move the football, but I believe NC State’s home-field advantage will make the difference.
This could be one of the closer games on the ACC schedule.
JB’S PREDICTION: NC STATE 27, CALIFORNIA 23
BOSTON COLLEGE AT DUKE
Noon ET | The CW
Boston College is coming off an impressive 49-27 victory over Georgia Tech, and I believe the Eagles are beginning to play with considerably more confidence.
Duke, meanwhile, has struggled to establish consistency.
The Blue Devils have enough defensive talent to make this interesting, but their offense needs to become more productive.
Boston College demonstrated last weekend that it can generate explosive plays, and I expect the Eagles to continue attacking aggressively.
Duke will benefit from playing at home, but I like the momentum Boston College brings into this matchup.
I’m going with the Eagles in a close one.
JB’S PREDICTION: BOSTON COLLEGE 28, DUKE 24
STANFORD AT LOUISVILLE
3:15 PM ET | ACC Network
Louisville has an opportunity to make a statement this weekend.
Stanford has been competitive at times, but the Cardinal have struggled with consistency, particularly against more physical opponents.
Louisville has the advantage in overall athleticism and should be able to establish control at the line of scrimmage.
I expect the Cardinals to emphasize their running game while creating opportunities for explosive plays through the air.
Stanford needs to avoid falling behind early because I don’t believe the Cardinal are particularly well equipped to win a shootout.
Louisville should take care of business at home.
JB’S PREDICTION: LOUISVILLE 35, STANFORD 17
VIRGINIA AT NO. 14 WAKE FOREST
3:45 PM ET | ESPN2
Wake Forest continues to be one of the more interesting stories in college football.
The Demon Deacons have quietly established themselves as legitimate contenders in the ACC, and I believe they deserve considerably more national attention.
Virginia presents an interesting challenge.
The Cavaliers have enough offensive talent to make this competitive, particularly if they can establish their running game.
But Wake Forest has demonstrated an ability to execute in critical situations, and I believe that will be important Saturday.
The Demon Deacons need to avoid turnovers and maintain their defensive discipline.
Virginia could make things uncomfortable, but I’m sticking with Wake Forest.
JB’S PREDICTION: WAKE FOREST 30, VIRGINIA 20
CLEMSON AT FLORIDA STATE
7:00 PM ET | ACC Network
This is my ACC Game of the Week.
Not necessarily because these are two of the best teams in the conference, but because of what this game represents.
Two proud programs. Two disappointed fan bases. Two coaching staffs facing enormous pressure.
Clemson’s decline has been one of the more surprising developments in college football.
Dabo Swinney built one of the nation’s premier programs, but the Tigers no longer resemble the teams that routinely competed for national championships.
The offensive inconsistencies have been troubling, and I’ve questioned whether Swinney’s loyalty to certain players and his overall approach to roster management have contributed to the program’s problems.
Florida State has experienced its own difficulties.
The Seminoles have struggled to establish consistency, and the pressure surrounding the program has continued to intensify.
So what happens when these two teams meet?
I believe this game comes down to which team can avoid making the critical mistake.
Clemson has enough defensive talent to create problems for Florida State, but I’m not convinced the Tigers can consistently generate the offensive production necessary to win on the road.
Florida State will have the advantage of playing in Tallahassee, and I expect the Seminoles to approach this game with considerable emotion.
I also believe Clemson is vulnerable.
The Tigers have struggled to establish an offensive identity, and when you’re playing on the road against a desperate opponent, that becomes a significant problem.
I’m going to take Florida State in a close, physical game.
And if Clemson loses, the questions surrounding the direction of Swinney’s program will only become louder.
JB’S PREDICTION: FLORIDA STATE 24, CLEMSON 20
NO. 1 MIAMI AT NORTH CAROLINA
7:30 PM ET | ABC
Miami continues to look like the best football team in the country.
The Hurricanes improved to 7-0 with an impressive 52-23 victory over Pittsburgh, and I believe they’re playing with tremendous confidence.
Darian Mensah has been outstanding at quarterback, and Malachi Toney continues to demonstrate why he’s one of the most dangerous offensive weapons in college football.
What impresses me most about Miami is its balance.
The Hurricanes can run the football, attack opponents through the air, and play physical defense.
North Carolina has been inconsistent, and last weekend’s overtime loss to Syracuse certainly didn’t help.
The Tar Heels have enough talent to make things interesting early, particularly playing at home, but I don’t see them having the defensive personnel to consistently contain Miami’s offense.
The biggest concern for the Hurricanes is looking ahead.
Miami travels to Notre Dame next weekend for what could be one of the biggest games of the college football season.
Mario Cristobal needs to make sure his team remains focused on the opponent directly in front of it.
I don’t expect a letdown.
JB’S PREDICTION: MIAMI 41, NORTH CAROLINA 17
GEORGIA TECH AT PITTSBURGH
7:30 PM ET | ESPN2
Georgia Tech has been one of the more disappointing teams in the ACC this season.
The Yellow Jackets are coming off a 49-27 loss to Boston College, and their defensive struggles have become increasingly concerning.
Pittsburgh hasn’t exactly been a model of consistency either, but the Panthers have demonstrated an ability to compete with quality opponents.
I believe Pitt has the advantage defensively, particularly when it comes to generating pressure.
Georgia Tech needs to establish its running game and avoid putting its offense in difficult third-down situations.
The Yellow Jackets are capable of making this interesting, but I don’t trust their defense enough to pick them on the road.
Give me Pittsburgh.
JB’S PREDICTION: PITTSBURGH 31, GEORGIA TECH 21
JB’S FINAL THOUGHTS
There are several interesting storylines heading into Halloween weekend, but three games have my attention.
First, Miami needs to avoid looking ahead to Notre Dame. The Hurricanes are playing outstanding football, but maintaining an undefeated record requires discipline and focus every single week.
Second, Wake Forest has an opportunity to continue establishing itself as one of the legitimate contenders in the ACC.
And finally, there’s Clemson and Florida State.
I never imagined we’d reach a point where these two programs would meet with both struggling to remain relevant in the conference championship conversation.
But that’s where we are.
For Clemson, another loss would only intensify the questions surrounding Dabo Swinney and the direction of the program.
For Florida State, a victory would provide something positive during an otherwise disappointing season.
I’m predicting the Seminoles get it done.
