JB TALKING SPORTS
THE SEC IS HEADING INTO THE SECOND HALF OF THE SEASON, AND THE PRESSURE IS BUILDING
We’re seven weeks into the college football season, and the SEC championship picture is beginning to take shape.
But if there’s one thing we’ve learned about this conference, it’s that what we think we know on Saturday morning can change dramatically by Saturday night.
Georgia has established itself as the team to beat. Alabama is trying to recover from a disappointing loss to the Bulldogs. Ole Miss and Missouri are fighting to remain relevant in the championship conversation, and Mississippi State has an opportunity to make a statement against an LSU program that suddenly looks vulnerable.
Meanwhile, Texas needs to get back on track, and Kentucky has an opportunity to strengthen its position with a road victory over Oklahoma.
There are some outstanding matchups this weekend, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see an upset or two.
Let’s get into this week’s SEC Forecast.
NO. 6 ALABAMA AT NO. 14 TENNESSEE
3:30 PM ET | ABC
THE THIRD SATURDAY IN OCTOBER
There aren’t many rivalries in college football that generate the emotion of Alabama and Tennessee.
And this year, both teams have plenty to play for.
Alabama comes into Knoxville following a 20 to 17 loss to Georgia. Tennessee is 5 and 1 and understands that a victory over the Crimson Tide would significantly improve its position in the conference race.
Here’s what interests me about this matchup.
Alabama has the defensive personnel to create problems for Tennessee’s offense, particularly if the Volunteers struggle to protect their quarterback.
Tennessee surrendered ten sacks against Texas, and that’s a statistic that jumps off the page when you’re preparing to face Alabama.
The Volunteers cannot afford to get behind the chains and become predictable.
On the other side, Alabama needs to establish offensive consistency. The Crimson Tide cannot afford to settle for field goals or waste opportunities inside the red zone.
I expect Tennessee to come out emotionally charged, and Neyland Stadium will be rocking.
But emotion only carries you so far.
Eventually, this game will come down to execution, quarterback play, and which offensive line can control the line of scrimmage.
KEY TO THE GAME: Tennessee must protect its quarterback and avoid obvious passing situations.
JB’S PREDICTION: ALABAMA 31, TENNESSEE 24
NO. 13 MISSOURI AT NO. 9 OLE MISS
3:30 PM ET | SEC NETWORK
A GAME WITH MAJOR PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS
This might be the most intriguing offensive matchup in the SEC this weekend.
Missouri comes into Oxford after an impressive 27 to 6 victory over Texas A&M.
Ole Miss is coming off a convincing 52 to 17 victory over Vanderbilt.
Both teams have one conference loss, and neither can afford another setback if it wants to remain in serious contention for the SEC championship.
I’m particularly interested in the quarterback matchup.
Trinidad Chambliss has been one of my favorite quarterbacks to evaluate this season. He’s an outstanding athlete who can extend plays and create opportunities when protection breaks down.
But I’ve also said that defenses capable of keeping him contained can make him uncomfortable.
Missouri’s Austin Simmons is another quarterback I’ve spent considerable time evaluating. He has the arm talent to challenge defenses vertically, but consistency remains important.
This game may come down to which quarterback makes fewer mistakes.
Ole Miss has the home-field advantage, and I think that matters in a matchup this close.
But Missouri is certainly capable of winning.
KEY TO THE GAME: Missouri must contain Chambliss and force Ole Miss to sustain long drives rather than surrender explosive plays.
JB’S PREDICTION: OLE MISS 34, MISSOURI 30
NO. 16 MISSISSIPPI STATE AT NO. 22 LSU
NOON ET | ESPN
CAN KAMARIO TAYLOR MAKE ANOTHER STATEMENT?
I’ve been talking about Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor for several weeks.
And I continue to believe he’s one of the most intriguing young quarterbacks in college football.
Taylor has tremendous physical tools, a strong arm, and the ability to make plays outside the pocket.
What impressed me when Mississippi State played South Carolina wasn’t simply his athletic ability.
It was his confidence and his willingness to challenge a defense.
Now he gets an opportunity to play in Tiger Stadium.
But there’s an important question surrounding this matchup.
Taylor’s availability has been uncertain because of injury concerns, and that could dramatically change Mississippi State’s offensive approach.
LSU, meanwhile, is coming off a disappointing overtime loss to Kentucky.
Lane Kiffin’s team is 4 and 2, and another defeat could effectively eliminate the Tigers from serious playoff consideration.
I expect LSU to play with urgency.
But Mississippi State has enough offensive talent to make this interesting if Taylor and running back Fluff Bothwell are available.
The Bulldogs cannot allow LSU to dictate the tempo.
They need to establish their running game, protect the football, and make LSU defend the entire field.
KEY TO THE GAME: Mississippi State needs a healthy Taylor and must avoid turnovers in a hostile environment.
JB’S PREDICTION: LSU 30, MISSISSIPPI STATE 27
If Taylor is healthy and playing at his best, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Mississippi State pull the upset.
AUBURN AT NO. 1 GEORGIA
3:30 PM ET | ESPN
THE BULLDOGS ARE PLAYING LIKE THE TEAM TO BEAT
Georgia made a significant statement last weekend by going into Tuscaloosa and defeating Alabama.
Now the Bulldogs return home to face Auburn.
On paper, Georgia has a substantial advantage.
But this is the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry, and strange things have happened in this series.
The biggest challenge for Auburn will be matching Georgia’s physicality.
The Bulldogs have demonstrated that they can win games without needing spectacular offensive performances.
They play disciplined football, control the line of scrimmage, and generally avoid the kinds of mistakes that allow inferior opponents to hang around.
That’s what separates championship teams from everyone else.
Auburn must establish some semblance of a running game and avoid putting its quarterback in difficult third-down situations.
I don’t see Auburn consistently moving the football against Georgia’s defense.
And unless the Bulldogs become careless with the football, this one shouldn’t be particularly close.
KEY TO THE GAME: Georgia must avoid a letdown following its emotional victory over Alabama.
JB’S PREDICTION: GEORGIA 38, AUBURN 13
FLORIDA AT NO. 7 TEXAS
NOON ET | ABC
TWO TEAMS WITH SOMETHING TO PROVE
This is an interesting matchup because both programs are coming off disappointing performances.
Florida was thoroughly beaten by South Carolina, 38 to 19.
Texas suffered a 27 to 24 loss to Oklahoma.
And once again, questions surrounding Arch Manning are becoming part of the conversation.
I’ve been critical of the enormous expectations placed on Manning before he had established himself as an elite college quarterback.
That doesn’t mean he lacks talent.
It means talent and production are two different things.
Manning has the physical ability to become an outstanding quarterback, but he still needs to demonstrate greater consistency in his decision-making.
Florida’s defense has struggled, and South Carolina exposed some of those weaknesses last weekend.
If Texas can establish its running game and give Manning manageable passing situations, the Longhorns should have opportunities to move the football.
But Florida is dangerous enough to make this competitive if Texas continues turning the ball over.
KEY TO THE GAME: Arch Manning must protect the football and avoid forcing throws into coverage.
JB’S PREDICTION: TEXAS 34, FLORIDA 20
NO. 15 KENTUCKY AT OKLAHOMA
7:30 PM ET | SEC NETWORK
ARE THE WILDCATS FOR REAL?
Kentucky has become one of the more interesting teams in the SEC.
The Wildcats knocked off LSU in overtime last weekend, and now they travel to Norman to face Oklahoma.
Here’s what makes this matchup interesting.
Oklahoma is coming off an emotional victory over Texas, while Kentucky is trying to build momentum following its own impressive win.
Both teams have reasons to feel confident.
But both also have to guard against the emotional letdown that sometimes follows a major victory.
Kentucky has demonstrated that it can compete against talented opponents.
Oklahoma has the home-field advantage and should benefit from the confidence gained by beating Texas.
I expect a physical game with both teams trying to establish control at the line of scrimmage.
The biggest question for me is whether Kentucky can generate enough explosive plays against Oklahoma’s defense.
I think the Sooners find a way to win a close one.
KEY TO THE GAME: Oklahoma must establish offensive rhythm early and avoid giving Kentucky short fields.
JB’S PREDICTION: OKLAHOMA 27, KENTUCKY 24
ARKANSAS AT VANDERBILT
7:00 PM ET | ESPN2
SOMEBODY HAS TO GET BACK ON TRACK
Neither team has enjoyed the kind of conference success it hoped for.
Arkansas and Vanderbilt are both searching for their first SEC victory of the season.
That makes this game important for reasons that have little to do with the national rankings.
It’s about pride, confidence, and finding something positive to build on during the second half of the season.
Arkansas has enough offensive ability to move the football, but consistency has been a problem.
Vanderbilt has struggled to put together complete performances against conference opponents.
I expect a competitive game.
But I like Arkansas to make a few more plays offensively and escape Nashville with a victory.
KEY TO THE GAME: Arkansas must limit mistakes and finish drives with touchdowns.
JB’S PREDICTION: ARKANSAS 28, VANDERBILT 24
THE CITADEL AT TEXAS A&M
1:00 PM ET | SEC NETWORK+
THE AGGIES NEED A RESPONSE
Texas A&M is coming off an embarrassing offensive performance against Missouri.
The Aggies managed just six points in a 27 to 6 defeat.
This week, they face The Citadel.
The talent disparity is significant, and Texas A&M should have little difficulty winning this game.
But I’m more interested in how the Aggies execute than the final score.
Can they establish offensive rhythm?
Can they eliminate unnecessary mistakes?
Can they get their passing game functioning efficiently?
Those are the questions that matter heading into the more difficult portion of their schedule.
KEY TO THE GAME: Texas A&M needs to use this opportunity to correct its offensive problems.
JB’S PREDICTION: TEXAS A&M 45, THE CITADEL 10
JB’S THREE GAMES TO WATCH
1. ALABAMA AT TENNESSEE
A traditional SEC rivalry with major conference championship implications. Alabama is trying to rebound, while Tennessee has an opportunity to establish itself as a legitimate contender.
2. MISSOURI AT OLE MISS
Two outstanding offensive teams with quarterbacks capable of making explosive plays. I expect this to be one of the highest-scoring games in the conference this weekend.
3. MISSISSIPPI STATE AT LSU
This could become the upset of the week if Kamario Taylor is healthy. LSU cannot afford another loss, and Mississippi State has the offensive weapons to make things uncomfortable in Baton Rouge.
JB’S UPSET ALERT
MISSISSIPPI STATE OVER LSU
I’m picking LSU to win a close game, but this is the matchup that concerns me most.
Mississippi State has the personnel to create problems for LSU, particularly if Taylor is available and playing well.
The Tigers are under pressure, and pressure sometimes causes teams to play tight.
If Mississippi State can keep this game close into the fourth quarter, anything can happen.
FINAL TAKE
The second half of the SEC season is where championship contenders begin separating themselves from everybody else.
Georgia has positioned itself as the conference favorite, but there’s still plenty of football left to play.
Alabama cannot afford another setback. Ole Miss and Missouri are fighting for position. LSU is trying to keep its season from unraveling, and Kentucky has an opportunity to prove its recent success wasn’t a fluke.
And somewhere in this conference, there’s probably another upset waiting to happen.
That’s what makes SEC football so entertaining.
Every Saturday, somebody’s championship dreams get a little brighter.
And somebody else’s come crashing down.
