Clemson desperately needs to build some momentum, but North Carolina presents the kind of challenge that could become dangerous if the Tigers allow the Tar Heels to remain within striking distance.
Here are my keys to a Clemson victory.
1. Get Consistent Quarterback Play
The Tigers need more than an occasional big throw from Christopher Vizzina. They need consistent quarterback play from the opening possession until the final whistle.
Vizzina must make sound decisions, deliver the football accurately and avoid forcing throws when the play is not there. Most importantly, Clemson has to trust him enough to run the entire offense. Playing cautiously and trying to hide the quarterback will only make the Tigers easier to defend.
2. Establish the Line of Scrimmage
Clemson should have the talent advantage up front, but having better personnel means very little if it does not translate onto the field.
The offensive line must create movement in the running game and give Vizzina enough time to work through his progressions. Defensively, the Tigers need to disrupt North Carolina’s backfield and prevent the Tar Heels from establishing any rhythm.
This is a game Clemson should control in the trenches.
3. Create Explosive Plays
Clemson’s offense cannot spend the entire afternoon trying to survive on eight- and ten-play drives. The Tigers need chunk plays from their receivers, running backs and quarterback.
That means taking some calculated shots downfield and getting the football into the hands of the team’s best playmakers. Clemson has too much talent to operate an offense that constantly feels compressed and predictable.
4. Pressure the North Carolina Quarterback
Clemson’s defensive front has to make its presence felt. The Tigers cannot allow North Carolina’s quarterback to stand comfortably in the pocket and work through his reads.
Pressure must come without sacrificing discipline. Clemson needs to collapse the pocket, contain the edges and force hurried decisions. If the Tigers consistently win first and second down, they can turn the pass rush loose in obvious passing situations.
5. Stop the Run First
North Carolina’s easiest path to an upset would be controlling the football, shortening the game and keeping Clemson’s offense standing on the sideline.
The Tigers must win early downs and force the Tar Heels into predictable situations. If North Carolina is consistently facing second-and-five instead of second-and-nine, Clemson could be in for a much longer afternoon than expected.
6. Eliminate the Self-Inflicted Mistakes
Penalties, turnovers, busted assignments and missed tackles can keep an inferior opponent in the game. Clemson cannot continue making life more difficult for itself.
The Tigers need to play clean football, protect the ball and finish drives with points. Settling for field-goal attempts—or coming away empty—will only give North Carolina confidence.
7. Put the Game Away Early
Clemson cannot allow North Carolina to believe it has a chance in the fourth quarter. The longer the Tar Heels remain close, the more pressure shifts toward the Tigers and Dabo Swinney.
Clemson needs to start fast, establish control and force North Carolina to abandon its preferred game plan. This team needs a complete performance—not another game that remains uncomfortable deep into the second half.
Bottom Line
Clemson has the talent to control this matchup, but talent alone has not been enough. The Tigers must get consistent quarterback play, win the line of scrimmage and create explosive plays on offense.
If Clemson plays clean football and performs with urgency, the Tigers should win. But if the offense remains inconsistent and North Carolina is allowed to hang around, the pressure inside that Clemson program will only become more intense.
