October has arrived, and now the college football season begins separating the legitimate contenders from the teams that merely looked good in September.
Today’s schedule features three ranked-versus-ranked matchups, major conference races beginning to take shape and several coaches desperately needing a win. Here are the games I’ll be watching—in order of importance.
- No. 7 ALABAMA AT No. 16 MISSISSIPPI STATE
Noon | ABC
This is the game of the day.
Both teams enter undefeated, and Mississippi State has an opportunity to prove its resurgence is real. Kamario Taylor has quickly become one of the most exciting young quarterbacks in the country, but now he faces Alabama with the national spotlight shining directly on him.
The quarterback matchup between Taylor and Keelon Russell could also offer an early look at two of the top quarterback prospects in the 2028 NFL Draft.
Alabama remains the more talented team, but Starkville will be loud, Mississippi State believes it belongs, and Taylor gives the Bulldogs a legitimate chance to pull the upset.
- No. 4 MIAMI AT CLEMSON
7:30 p.m. | ABC
This is the biggest game in the ACC.
Miami has looked like one of the most complete teams in college football. The Hurricanes are averaging more than 50 points per game while Darian Mensah has thrown 14 touchdowns without an interception.
Clemson has recovered from its opening loss to LSU, but beating North Carolina, Georgia Southern and California does not prove the Tigers are back.
Beating Miami would.
Clemson still has the defensive talent and home-field advantage to make this interesting. Rain could also slow the game down and help the Tigers. But if Clemson cannot pressure Mensah and prevent explosive plays, Miami could turn Death Valley into another showcase.
- No. 5 OHIO STATE AT No. 14 IOWA
3:30 p.m. | CBS
Ohio State possesses more speed, more offensive firepower and the best player on the field in Jeremiah Smith.
Iowa, however, is undefeated and playing inside Kinnick Stadium, where highly ranked teams have gone to die before.
The Hawkeyes want to shorten the game, force Ohio State to become impatient and turn this into a fourth-quarter fight. If Iowa can keep the Buckeyes below 24 points, the upset becomes possible.
This is Ohio State’s opportunity to show that its early loss did not eliminate it from national championship contention.
- No. 8 FLORIDA AT No. 25 MISSOURI
3:30 p.m. | ABC
Florida has become one of the biggest winners of the first month.
John Sumrall has changed the identity of this football team, and Jadan Baugh has run himself directly into the Heisman conversation. After destroying Ole Miss, the Gators must now prove they can handle success on the road.
Missouri has been difficult to figure out. The Tigers remain dangerous at home, but their loss to Mississippi State exposed some weaknesses.
If Florida wins convincingly, we must begin viewing the Gators as a legitimate SEC and College Football Playoff contender.
- No. 10 BYU AT TCU
7 p.m. | ESPN
BYU is undefeated and carrying the flag for the Big 12, but TCU is much more dangerous than its 2–2 record suggests.
The Cougars cannot afford to stumble because the Big 12 may not receive much forgiveness from the playoff committee. Every conference road game becomes an elimination game.
This should tell us whether BYU is truly a top-10 team or simply the latest September creation.
- KENTUCKY AT SOUTH CAROLINA
4:15 p.m. | SEC Network
This may not carry the national ranking of the games above it, but few games today will have greater consequences for one program.
Kentucky is playing with confidence under Will Stein. The Wildcats have a balanced offense, an efficient quarterback and a defense that has forced turnovers.
South Carolina enters wounded, undisciplined and desperate.
Shane Beamer needs this victory. LaNorris Sellers needs to play well. The Gamecocks need to prove they have not quit on their coach or their season.
If Carolina falls behind early, Williams-Brice Stadium could become an extremely uncomfortable place. If Kentucky wins, the conversation in Columbia will immediately shift from whether Beamer is in trouble to when the university will make a change.
- AUBURN AT TENNESSEE
3:30 p.m. | ESPN
These are two teams searching for stability.
Tennessee needs to recover from its emotional loss to Texas, while Auburn needs to prove it can compete consistently against quality SEC opponents.
The team that controls the line of scrimmage and avoids the disastrous turnover will win. Neither program can afford another conference loss this early.
- No. 3 NOTRE DAME AT NORTH CAROLINA
Noon | ESPN
Notre Dame has been dominant, outscoring its first four opponents 169–33.
CJ Carr has completed more than 70 percent of his passes with nine touchdowns and only one interception. The Irish defense is allowing just over eight points per game.
North Carolina must run the football, shorten the game and create pressure without constantly blitzing. Otherwise, Notre Dame could have this finished before halftime.
For the Irish, anything short of a convincing victory will be considered disappointing.
- VIRGINIA AT FLORIDA STATE
3:30 p.m. | ESPN2
Virginia enters with one of the better defenses in the country, while Florida State’s defense has been one of the worst.
That makes this another dangerous game for Mike Norvell.
Florida State still possesses enough explosive talent to win at home, but Virginia is more disciplined, more consistent and better at sustaining drives. If the Seminoles lose, the pressure surrounding the program will become deafening.
- LOUISVILLE AT NC STATE
3:30 p.m. | ACC Network
Both teams enter 2–2, making this almost an elimination game in the ACC race.
Louisville has shown the ability to create explosive plays, but the Cardinals have also been inconsistent. NC State has the home-field advantage and a talented quarterback in CJ Bailey, but its defensive front must generate more disruption.
The loser will leave October’s opening weekend with very little room for error.
OTHER GAMES TO MONITOR
Vanderbilt at No. 2 Georgia
Arkansas at Texas A&M
Boston College at No. 21 SMU
Virginia Tech–Pittsburgh has already provided the weekend’s first drama, with unbeaten Pitt escaping Blacksburg 35–33.
MY GAME-DAY ORDER
Alabama–Mississippi State gives us the best SEC matchup and the most fascinating quarterback battle.
Miami–Clemson determines whether the ACC still belongs to the Tigers—or whether Miami has officially taken control.
Ohio State–Iowa carries major playoff consequences.
But for Gamecock fans, nothing matters more than Kentucky at South Carolina. This is no longer simply another conference game.
It may be a referendum on the entire Shane Beamer era.
