Week 8 | October 18, 2026

By James Baxter

THE SEC HAS BEEN TURNED UPSIDE DOWN!

If Saturday taught us anything, it’s that nobody in the Southeastern Conference is untouchable.

Georgia was the No. 1 team in America. Auburn walked into Athens and beat them.

Alabama was supposed to be a national championship contender. Tennessee held the Crimson Tide to 10 points.

Texas was supposed to be one of the most talented teams in college football. Florida went into Austin and handed the Longhorns another loss.

Meanwhile, Ole Miss absolutely dismantled Missouri, LSU embarrassed Mississippi State, and Kentucky continued making its case as a legitimate SEC contender.

Forget preseason rankings. Forget recruiting stars. Forget what the television analysts told us these teams were supposed to be.

It’s time to evaluate what they’re actually putting on the football field.

Here are my SEC Power Rankings heading into Week 8.

1. OLE MISS REBELS (5-1) ⬆️

I’m putting Ole Miss at No. 1.

The Rebels didn’t just beat Missouri. They dominated a nationally ranked opponent 31-3.

Trinidad Chambliss continues to demonstrate why I’ve been so high on him as an NFL quarterback prospect.

What impressed me most was the complete performance. The defense was outstanding, the offense executed, and Ole Miss controlled the game.

Right now, I believe the Rebels are playing the best football in the SEC.

2. GEORGIA BULLDOGS (6-1) ⬇️

Georgia isn’t suddenly a bad football team because Auburn beat them 27-24.

But the Bulldogs have some serious issues to address.

Gunner Stockton committed three turnovers, and Georgia couldn’t protect a 14-point first-quarter advantage.

Championship teams have to finish games.

Georgia still has one of the most talented rosters in the country, but Saturday exposed some vulnerabilities.

3. TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS (6-1) ⬆️

The Volunteers made one of the biggest statements of the weekend.

Beating Alabama is impressive. Holding Alabama to 10 points is something entirely different.

Tennessee’s defense absolutely controlled the Crimson Tide offense.

The Volunteers are no longer simply a dangerous team capable of pulling an upset.

They’re legitimate SEC championship contenders.

4. KENTUCKY WILDCATS (6-1) ⬆️

How about Kentucky?

The Wildcats went into Norman and beat Oklahoma 21-13.

Kentucky isn’t winning games because it has the most talented roster in the conference. It’s winning because it’s playing disciplined, physical football.

That’s coaching.

And right now, Kentucky deserves considerably more respect than it’s receiving.

5. LSU TIGERS (5-2) ⬆️

LSU made a statement with its 31-0 demolition of Mississippi State.

Remember, this was a Mississippi State team that entered the weekend nationally ranked and had been generating considerable excitement behind quarterback Kamario Taylor.

LSU completely shut that offense down.

That’s the kind of defensive performance that can change the trajectory of a season.

6. ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE (5-2) ⬇️

Something isn’t right in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama has now lost consecutive games to Georgia and Tennessee.

Against Tennessee, the Crimson Tide managed only 201 yards of offense and committed four turnovers.

That’s unacceptable for a program with Alabama’s talent.

The biggest concern isn’t simply losing. It’s the lack of offensive execution.

Alabama has the personnel to beat anybody, but right now, it’s not playing championship football.

7. AUBURN TIGERS (4-2) ⬆️

Auburn just delivered the biggest upset in the SEC this season.

Walking into Athens and beating the No. 1 team in the country takes something special.

Byrum Brown was outstanding, particularly with his ability to make plays with his legs.

Auburn demonstrated that it can compete physically with the best teams in America.

Now the question becomes whether the Tigers can maintain that level of performance.

One great Saturday doesn’t make you a championship team.

Consistency does.

8. FLORIDA GATORS (5-2) ⬆️

Florida deserves credit.

The Gators went into Austin and beat Texas 27-24, and they did it with freshman quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. making his first career start.

Jadan Baugh continues to impress me as a running back.

Florida has now demonstrated that it has the personnel to compete against quality opponents.

The Gators are dangerous, particularly when they establish the running game.

9. TEXAS LONGHORNS (4-2) ⬇️

Texas is becoming one of the biggest disappointments in the SEC.

The Longhorns have tremendous talent, but talent doesn’t automatically translate into winning football.

Arch Manning and the offense continue to struggle with consistency.

Losing at home to Florida raises legitimate questions about this team’s championship potential.

At some point, Texas has to stop living off preseason expectations.

10. MISSOURI TIGERS (5-2) ⬇️

Missouri took a beating Saturday.

There’s no other way to describe a 31-3 loss to Ole Miss.

The Tigers entered the game nationally ranked and left Oxford looking like a team that wasn’t ready for the challenge.

Missouri still has enough talent to recover, but this performance raises serious questions about how the Tigers match up against the SEC’s better teams.

11. MISSISSIPPI STATE BULLDOGS (4-2) ⬇️

I’ve been impressed with Kamario Taylor this season.

But Saturday was a reminder that even talented young quarterbacks can struggle when facing a defense capable of controlling the line of scrimmage.

LSU shut out Mississippi State 31-0.

That’s a humbling experience.

The Bulldogs have made progress, but they’re not yet ready to consistently compete with the SEC’s upper tier.

12. SOUTH CAROLINA GAMECOCKS (3-3) ↔️

South Carolina had the weekend off.

And frankly, this team remains one of the most frustrating in the conference.

We’ve seen what the Gamecocks are capable of when they execute.

We’ve also watched them lose games they had no business losing.

The problem isn’t simply talent.

It’s consistency, player development, preparation, and coaching.

Until South Carolina demonstrates that it can put together complete performances, I can’t justify moving the Gamecocks any higher.

13. OKLAHOMA SOONERS (3-3) ⬇️

Oklahoma’s 21-13 home loss to Kentucky was another disappointing performance.

The Sooners have struggled to establish offensive consistency, and turnovers continue to undermine their chances.

This is a program that should be competing for SEC championships.

Instead, Oklahoma is struggling to establish an identity.

14. TEXAS A&M AGGIES (4-3) ↔️

Texas A&M handled The Citadel 41-0.

That’s exactly what an SEC program should do against an overmatched opponent.

But beating The Citadel doesn’t erase the Aggies’ problems against conference competition.

I need to see Texas A&M demonstrate that it can beat quality SEC opponents before moving it up these rankings.

15. ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS (3-4) ⬆️

Arkansas picked up a much-needed 31-21 victory over Vanderbilt.

The Razorbacks have been inconsistent throughout the season, but Saturday was a positive step.

There’s enough talent on this roster to be more competitive.

The question is whether Arkansas can build on this victory.

16. VANDERBILT COMMODORES (3-4) ⬇️

Vanderbilt continues to struggle.

The Commodores fell to Arkansas 31-21 and remain winless in SEC competition.

There have been moments when Vanderbilt has looked competitive, but sustaining that performance has been a problem.

Right now, the Commodores belong at the bottom of the conference.

JB’S FINAL TAKE

Here’s what makes the SEC so interesting this season.

I don’t believe there’s a dominant team in the conference.

Georgia can be beaten.

Alabama can be beaten.

Texas can be beaten.

And we’ve now seen teams like Auburn, Florida, and Tennessee demonstrate that the gap between the conference’s traditional powers and everybody else isn’t nearly as wide as some people believed.

But let’s not confuse parity with greatness.

Just because everybody is capable of beating everybody doesn’t necessarily mean the conference is stronger.

Sometimes it means the elite teams simply aren’t as good as we thought.

My biggest takeaway from Week 7?

Ole Miss is playing the best football in the conference, Tennessee is becoming a legitimate championship threat, and Georgia remains dangerous despite Saturday’s loss.

But there isn’t a single team in the SEC that I’d consider unbeatable.

And that should make the second half of the season very interesting.
