The ACC remains Miami at the top and complete chaos underneath it. Wake Forest continues to climb, Louisville may have finally found its identity, and previously unbeaten Pitt and Duke both went down Saturday.

These rankings are based on what teams have accomplished on the field—not preseason expectations or the name on the helmet.

  1. MIAMI HURRICANES

Miami was off this weekend, but nothing happened to threaten its position at the top. The undefeated Hurricanes have the best combination of talent, speed and production in the conference. Their 41–13 demolition of Clemson remains the most impressive ACC victory of the season.

  1. WAKE FOREST DEMON DEACONS

Wake Forest went into Raleigh and dominated NC State 38–14. The Demon Deacons are 5–1 overall, 3–1 in the conference and have won three straight. They may not possess Miami’s talent, but they are playing like one of the ACC’s most complete teams.

  1. SMU MUSTANGS

SMU was off this weekend and remains 4–1 overall and 2–1 in the ACC. The Mustangs are balanced, explosive and very much alive in the conference championship race. Their upcoming game against Virginia should tell us much more.

  1. PITTSBURGH PANTHERS

Pitt’s undefeated season ended with a 21–17 home loss to North Carolina. The Panthers remain 5–1, but losing at home to an unranked team raises questions. Pitt is still one of the ACC’s better teams, but it no longer deserves to be mentioned alongside Miami.

  1. VIRGINIA CAVALIERS

Virginia had to fight its way back against Syracuse before escaping with a 28–25 victory. It was not impressive, but the Cavaliers found a way to win after trailing 17–7. Virginia is 4–2 and remains in the middle of the ACC race.

  1. CLEMSON TIGERS

Clemson was off this weekend, which may have been a good thing after getting embarrassed 41–13 by Miami. The Tigers still have enough talent to climb these rankings, but right now, they do not look anything like an elite football team.

  1. DUKE BLUE DEVILS

Duke entered the weekend undefeated and left Atlanta with a 28–25 loss to Georgia Tech. The Blue Devils remain 4–1, but they missed an opportunity to establish themselves as Miami’s biggest challenger. Good teams have to finish games like this.

  1. LOUISVILLE CARDINALS

Louisville may finally be figuring things out. The Cardinals fell behind Florida State 14–0 before scoring 35 unanswered points and winning 44–20. Isaac Brown’s 97-yard touchdown run changed the game, and Louisville finished with nearly 400 rushing yards. This looked like the team many expected to see before the season.

  1. NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS

North Carolina earned the biggest win of the Bill Belichick era by going on the road and beating No. 25 Pitt 21–17. The Tar Heels are still difficult to evaluate, but defeating an undefeated ranked opponent deserves respect.

  1. CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS

California earned a solid 25–20 victory over Virginia Tech. The Golden Bears are only 3–3, but they are 2–1 in conference play and have shown they can be a difficult matchup at home.

  1. VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES

Virginia Tech started the season well, but the Hokies have now lost two consecutive games. Saturday’s loss at California dropped them to 4–2 overall and 1–2 in the conference. They remain competitive, but their momentum is disappearing quickly.

  1. GEORGIA TECH YELLOW JACKETS

Georgia Tech finally earned a meaningful victory by knocking off previously undefeated Duke 28–25. The Yellow Jackets are only 2–3, but this was the kind of win that could begin turning their season around.

  1. FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES

Florida State led Louisville 14–0 and appeared ready to take control of the game. Instead, the Seminoles were outscored 44–6 the rest of the way and surrendered 397 rushing yards. They are now 3–3, and Mike Norvell’s team continues to collapse whenever adversity arrives.

  1. NC STATE WOLFPACK

NC State was tied with Wake Forest at halftime before being outscored 28–0 in the second half. The Wolfpack were beaten 38–14 at home and fell to 3–3. That was a complete second-half collapse.

  1. SYRACUSE ORANGE

Syracuse deserves some credit for taking Virginia to the wire while playing deep into its quarterback depth. However, the Orange are now 0–3 in the ACC. Playing hard matters, but eventually you have to win.

  1. BOSTON COLLEGE EAGLES

Boston College was off this weekend. The Eagles are 2–3 overall, winless in conference play and have done very little to inspire confidence that things are about to improve.

  1. STANFORD CARDINAL

Stanford was completely overwhelmed by Notre Dame in a 58–7 loss. The Cardinal are 2–4 and have lost three road games. Right now, this is the weakest team in the ACC.

BIGGEST RISER: Louisville

BIGGEST FALLER: Florida State

TEAM TO WATCH: Wake Forest

BEST TEAM: Miami

MY TAKE

Miami remains the clear No. 1 team in the ACC, but Wake Forest is no longer a team anyone can dismiss. The Demon Deacons are playing physical, disciplined football and just dominated their rival on the road.

Louisville may be the conference’s most dangerous wild card. The Cardinals already had talent, but Saturday was the first time they put everything together. Falling behind 14–0 and responding with a 35–0 run showed toughness and coaching adjustments that had been missing.

Pitt and Duke both had opportunities to establish themselves as legitimate challengers. Both failed. Clemson has the name and recruiting rankings, but it has not played like one of the ACC’s best teams.

The biggest disaster remains Florida State. The Seminoles didn’t simply lose—they folded. Once Louisville punched back, Florida State had no answer.

Right now, Miami is alone at the top. Wake Forest is making its case, and everybody else is fighting to prove they belong in the conversation.
