The sky is not falling yet.

There’s no way to sugarcoat losing Jayden Sellers and Jayden Gibson for the season. Those are two guys South Carolina expected to play significant roles in this offense, and losing both before the season even gets going is a hell of a blow.

But I’m not ready to hit the panic button on this South Carolina wide receiver room.

Why?

Because they still have Nyck Harbor.

Harbor has reached the point where he can be a legitimate difference-maker. We all know about the ridiculous size and speed. The question has always been whether he could turn all of those physical tools into production on the football field. We started seeing that happen last season, and I think he has a chance to take another huge step this year.

The injuries do change things around him, though.

South Carolina doesn’t have the luxury of having the depth we thought they were going to have. Gibson gave them another big outside target, and Sellers was a young receiver who looked like he was ready for a much larger role.

Now guys like Nitro Tuggle and Mazeo Bennett Jr. become extremely important.

And keep an eye on Donovan Murph.

Sometimes an injury doesn’t just take a player out of the lineup. It creates an opportunity for somebody else. Murph is a talented young receiver, and suddenly there are going to be snaps and targets available that weren’t necessarily there a week ago.

That’s the part of this that I’m going to be watching.

South Carolina doesn’t need somebody to replace Nyck Harbor. They already have their number-one receiver.

What they need is somebody to emerge as that dependable second option for LaNorris Sellers.

Because you can bet your ass SEC defensive coordinators are going to know where Harbor is on every snap. They’re going to roll coverage toward him, put a safety over the top and make somebody else beat them.

Who is that somebody?

If Tuggle, Bennett or Murph steps up, I still think this can be a very dangerous receiving corps.

But the margin for error just got a hell of a lot smaller.

Before these injuries, I looked at wide receiver as one of South Carolina’s strengths, with both talent and depth.

Now?

They still have the talent. I’m just not nearly as comfortable with the depth.

And they absolutely cannot afford another major injury at the position.
