My Top 10 Defensive Players in the SEC for 2026

Everybody talks about quarterbacks and explosive offenses, but championships are still won with great defense. The SEC has no shortage of game changers on that side of the ball, and these are the ten defenders I believe will have the biggest impact this season.

1. Colin Simmons, EDGE, Texas
Until someone proves otherwise, he’s the best defensive player in the SEC. He’s explosive off the edge, disruptive against the run, and can completely change a game in one series.

2. Dylan Stewart, EDGE, South Carolina
Stewart has all the tools to become one of the best defensive players in the country. His combination of speed, strength, and length makes him a nightmare for offensive tackles.

3. KJ Bolden, Safety, Georgia
The modern-day safety has to do everything, and Bolden does. He can cover, tackle, blitz, and always seems to be around the football.

4. Jermod McCoy, Cornerback, Tennessee
One of the best shutdown corners in college football. Quarterbacks simply don’t like testing him very often.

5. Princewill Umanmielen, EDGE, LSU
One of the most explosive pass rushers in the conference. If LSU’s defense takes a big step forward this year, he’ll be a big reason why.

6. David Stone, Defensive Tackle, Oklahoma
Dominant interior linemen are hard to find, and Stone has the ability to collapse the pocket while stuffing the run.

7. Will Echoles, Linebacker, Ole Miss
A tackling machine and the leader of the Rebels’ defense. He’s one of the most fundamentally sound linebackers in the SEC.

8. Elijah Hughes, Defensive Tackle, Texas A&M
Big, physical, and incredibly difficult to block. He makes everyone around him better by commanding double teams.

9. Daylen Everette, Cornerback, Georgia
Georgia always seems to produce elite defensive backs, and Everette continues that tradition. He’s physical, instinctive, and has a knack for making big plays.

10. Anthony Hill Jr., Linebacker, Texas
One of the most complete linebackers in college football. He can rush the passer, stop the run, and cover in space as well as anyone.

Just Outside My Top 10

  • Michael Taaffe, Texas
  • Christen Miller, Georgia
  • Caleb Banks, Florida
  • LT Overton, Alabama
  • Taylor Wein, Oklahoma

One thing stands out when I look at this list: edge rushers are still the most valuable defenders in college football. The quickest way to wreck an offense is to pressure the quarterback, and the SEC is loaded with elite pass rushers.

If I had to pick one player to build my defense around today, I’d still take Colin Simmons. But don’t sleep on Dylan Stewart. By the end of the season, there’s a very real chance we’re talking about him as the best defensive player in the SEC.
