College Football’s Biggest Stories, Surprises and Statement Wins

Saturday reminded us why college football remains the most unpredictable and entertaining sport in America.
We had a national championship contender knocked off its perch, another nearly suffer the same fate, a handful of ranked teams exposed, and several programs make convincing statements about where they belong in the national conversation.
And down in Norman, Oklahoma, something happened that South Carolina fans have been waiting to see for much of the season.
Superman showed up.
So grab your coffee, settle into your favorite chair, and join me for this week’s Sunday Drive as we take a look at the games, performances, and storylines that defined another remarkable Saturday of college football.
SOUTH CAROLINA 42, OKLAHOMA 25
Superman Sellers Arrives in Norman
I’ve said repeatedly that South Carolina’s fortunes depend heavily on which version of LaNorris Sellers shows up on Saturday.
Against Oklahoma, the Sooners got the version that defensive coordinators have nightmares about.
Sellers threw for 301 yards and three touchdowns while adding another 96 yards and two scores on the ground. That’s 397 yards of individual offense and five touchdowns against a defense that came into the contest with a reputation for making life miserable for opposing quarterbacks.
And it wasn’t just the statistics. It was the way Sellers controlled the football game.
His 84-yard touchdown pass to DJ Black was a thing of beauty. His 79-yard scoring strike to Mazeo Bennett Jr. demonstrated just how quickly this South Carolina offense can turn an ordinary possession into six points.
But what impressed me most was the way the Gamecocks responded to adversity.
When Oklahoma returned a Sellers interception for a touchdown to tie the game at seven, South Carolina could have allowed the momentum to shift.
Instead, the Gamecocks responded by taking control of the football game.
South Carolina led 28-10 at halftime and 35-10 after three quarters. Oklahoma managed just 118 yards of offense through those first three periods.
That’s domination.
Now comes the question that has followed this team throughout the season.
Can they do it again?
South Carolina has won three consecutive games and improved to 5-3 overall. The Gamecocks have demonstrated that they possess the talent to compete with quality SEC opponents.
What they haven’t demonstrated yet is the ability to sustain that level of performance over an extended period.
But Saturday was encouraging.
The offensive line gave Sellers opportunities. The receivers made explosive plays. The defense dictated the terms of engagement for three quarters.
For the first time in a while, South Carolina looked like a team capable of beating just about anybody when everything is clicking.
The challenge for Shane Beamer is making sure that version of the Gamecocks becomes the standard rather than the exception.
My Take: South Carolina didn’t just win a football game Saturday. The Gamecocks reminded everyone what their ceiling looks like. If Sellers continues playing at this level, nobody remaining on the schedule should feel comfortable.
USC 30, NO. 2 OHIO STATE 18
The Buckeyes Get Exposed in Los Angeles
The biggest national shocker of the weekend came in Los Angeles, where Southern California knocked off second-ranked Ohio State.
And this wasn’t some last-second field goal or fortunate bounce of the football.
The Trojans won by 12 points.
Ohio State entered the weekend with legitimate national championship aspirations, but Saturday demonstrated just how quickly those dreams can become complicated.
Southern Cal deserves enormous credit. The Trojans didn’t simply hang around hoping for an opportunity. They defeated one of the nation’s premier programs.
For Ohio State, the loss raises legitimate questions about how the Buckeyes respond when confronted by an opponent capable of matching their athleticism and challenging them physically.
One loss doesn’t eliminate a team from the expanded playoff picture.
But it certainly changes the conversation.
My Take: Ohio State remains talented enough to compete for a national championship, but the Buckeyes have lost the luxury of being considered nearly untouchable. Southern Cal earned this victory, and the rest of the Big Ten should take notice.
NO. 1 MIAMI 38, NORTH CAROLINA 35
The Hurricanes Survive a Scare
Miami escaped Chapel Hill with a three-point victory, but this wasn’t exactly the kind of performance you expect from the nation’s top-ranked team.
North Carolina pushed the Hurricanes to the brink before Miami managed to escape with a 38-35 victory.
There is something to be said for finding ways to win football games when you aren’t playing your best.
Championship teams do that.
But there is also something concerning about allowing an opponent to remain within striking distance for four quarters when you’re supposed to be among the elite programs in America.
Miami remains unbeaten in the most important category Saturday: the final score.
But the Hurricanes didn’t do much to strengthen their argument that they’re clearly the nation’s best team.
My Take: Miami survived, and survival matters. But if the Hurricanes continue allowing opponents to hang around, eventually somebody is going to finish the job.
NO. 3 GEORGIA 27, NO. 17 FLORIDA 8
Bulldogs Make Their Statement
While Miami struggled and Ohio State stumbled, Georgia handled its business.
The Bulldogs dominated Florida 27-8 in a rivalry game that demonstrated the difference between a team hoping to compete at the highest level and one accustomed to doing exactly that.
Georgia’s defense was the story.
Florida simply couldn’t generate enough offense to put meaningful pressure on the Bulldogs.
Georgia didn’t need an offensive fireworks display. The Bulldogs controlled the contest, protected their advantage, and walked away with a convincing victory.
That’s championship-caliber football.
My Take: Georgia might have made the strongest argument of anyone Saturday for deserving the nation’s top ranking. The Bulldogs look like a team rounding into form at precisely the right time.
NO. 4 INDIANA 23, MINNESOTA 16 (OT)
Hoosiers Survive a Battle
Indiana needed overtime to escape Minnesota, 23-16.
It wasn’t pretty, but nobody awards style points in the win column.
The Hoosiers have established themselves as legitimate contenders, but Saturday demonstrated that even the best teams can find themselves in difficult situations against determined conference opponents.
Minnesota deserves credit for making Indiana work for everything.
Still, the Hoosiers found a way to win.
My Take: Indiana survived its scare. But with Ohio State losing and Miami barely escaping, the national championship picture suddenly looks considerably more interesting.
NO. 5 NOTRE DAME 35, NAVY 13
Irish Take Care of Business
Notre Dame did exactly what it needed to do against Navy.
The Fighting Irish controlled the game and came away with a comfortable 35-13 victory.
There was no dramatic comeback required, no late defensive stand, and no need to explain away a disappointing performance.
Notre Dame simply handled its business.
With Ohio State losing, the Irish could find themselves moving up in the national rankings.
My Take: Notre Dame continues positioning itself for the postseason. Saturday was another important step toward that goal.
NO. 6 UTAH 49, CINCINNATI 25
Utes Keep Rolling
Utah delivered one of the more impressive offensive performances of the weekend, putting 49 points on Cincinnati.
The Utes continue demonstrating that they deserve serious consideration in the national championship conversation.
And with the playoff race beginning to tighten, convincing victories matter.
My Take: Utah isn’t receiving the national attention that some traditional powers enjoy, but the Utes are building a résumé that will become increasingly difficult to ignore.
NO. 7 UCLA 27, NEVADA 0
Bruins Pitch a Shutout
UCLA didn’t allow Nevada to score a single point.
The Bruins delivered a 27-0 victory that might not generate national headlines, but defensive shutouts deserve recognition.
UCLA continues to position itself among the nation’s elite programs.
My Take: Defense travels, and defense wins championships. The Bruins demonstrated Saturday that they can win without needing to light up the scoreboard.
NO. 8 BYU 27, ARIZONA STATE 20
Cougars Hold Their Ground
BYU survived a determined Arizona State team, winning 27-20.
The Cougars weren’t spectacular, but they did enough to preserve their position in the playoff conversation.
Arizona State made them earn it.
My Take: BYU remains firmly in the Big 12 championship picture, but the margin for error is getting smaller.
NO. 11 TEXAS 31, MISSISSIPPI STATE 3
Longhorns Dominate
Texas delivered a convincing 31-3 victory over Mississippi State.
The Longhorns controlled the game defensively and never allowed the Bulldogs to develop any meaningful offensive momentum.
Texas has experienced its share of questions this season, but Saturday was the kind of performance that can restore confidence.
My Take: Texas still has the personnel to make noise in the SEC race. The challenge is reproducing performances like this against stronger competition.
NO. 12 OLE MISS 45, AUBURN 15
Rebels Make It Look Easy
Ole Miss overwhelmed Auburn 45-15, turning what could have been a competitive SEC matchup into a comfortable victory.
The Rebels continue demonstrating that their offense can be extremely difficult to contain.
Auburn simply couldn’t keep pace.
My Take: Ole Miss remains dangerous, particularly when its offense establishes an early rhythm. The Rebels are a team nobody should overlook down the stretch.
NO. 13 TEXAS TECH 34, NO. 22 ARIZONA 26
Red Raiders Win a Ranked Showdown
Texas Tech emerged from one of the weekend’s most intriguing ranked matchups with a 34-26 victory over Arizona.
This was an important conference win against an opponent with legitimate postseason ambitions.
The Red Raiders continue strengthening their position in the Big 12.
My Take: Texas Tech deserves more attention nationally. The Red Raiders are proving they belong in the conversation.
NO. 14 WAKE FOREST 51, VIRGINIA 7
Demon Deacons Deliver a Beatdown
If you’re looking for one of the weekend’s most complete performances, look no further than Wake Forest.
The Demon Deacons absolutely dismantled Virginia, 51-7.
Forty-four points.
That’s the margin.
Wake Forest made a powerful statement in a conference where Miami receives most of the national attention.
My Take: Don’t overlook Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons are becoming one of the more interesting stories in the ACC.
SYRACUSE 30, NO. 19 SMU 27
Orange Pull Off the Upset
Syracuse delivered one of Saturday’s biggest surprises, knocking off No. 19 SMU.
The Mustangs entered the weekend hoping to strengthen their position in the ACC race.
Instead, Syracuse handed them a damaging conference defeat.
My Take: This is precisely why conference games are dangerous. Rankings mean very little when the football is kicked off.
OREGON 34, NO. 20 NORTHWESTERN 26
Ducks Knock Off Ranked Wildcats
Oregon defeated Northwestern 34-26 in a game that deserves more national attention.
The Ducks earned a victory over a ranked opponent and demonstrated that they remain capable of competing with quality Big Ten competition.
My Take: Oregon’s victory shouldn’t get lost among the bigger national headlines. Beating a ranked opponent matters, regardless of where the teams sit in the standings.
IOWA STATE 51, NO. 24 OKLAHOMA STATE 49
Big 12 Fireworks
If you enjoy offensive football, this was your game.
Iowa State outlasted Oklahoma State 51-49 in a contest that featured 100 combined points.
The Cowboys scored 49 points and still lost.
That’s a difficult pill to swallow.
My Take: Entertaining? Absolutely. But surrendering 51 points isn’t a formula for sustained championship success.
IOWA 30, NO. 25 WISCONSIN 0
Hawkeyes Humiliate the Badgers
Iowa delivered one of the weekend’s more surprising results, shutting out ranked Wisconsin 30-0.
The Badgers didn’t just lose.
They failed to score.
That’s an embarrassing result for a ranked program, particularly against a conference rival.
My Take: Wisconsin has some serious questions to answer. Iowa deserves credit for delivering a convincing victory.
NO. 23 MISSOURI 34, ARKANSAS 10
Tigers Handle Their Business
Missouri went into Arkansas and came away with a comfortable 34-10 victory.
The Tigers controlled the contest and avoided the kind of road upset that can derail a promising season.
My Take: Missouri remains a dangerous SEC opponent, and Saturday was another example of why nobody should take the Tigers lightly.
NO. 20 BOISE STATE 46, TEXAS STATE 45
Broncos Survive a Wild One
Boise State escaped with a one-point victory over Texas State in one of the highest-scoring games involving a ranked team.
The Broncos found enough offense to survive, but allowing 45 points raises questions about their defense.
My Take: A win is a win, but Boise State cannot afford many more defensive performances like this if it expects to remain a serious postseason contender.
THE BIG PICTURE
What Saturday Means for the Playoff Race
Saturday created some interesting possibilities as we move deeper into November.
Ohio State’s loss opens the door for movement near the top of the rankings.
Georgia made a strong case for moving up. Notre Dame and Utah continued building their résumés. Indiana survived an overtime scare, while Miami barely escaped North Carolina.
Meanwhile, the Big 12 continues producing intriguing contenders, with Utah, BYU, and Texas Tech all recording victories.
And don’t overlook what happened in the ACC.
Miami survived, Wake Forest dominated, and SMU stumbled.
There is still plenty of football to be played, and the expanded playoff format means teams with one or even two losses aren’t necessarily finished.
But the pressure is increasing.
Every Saturday matters a little more now.
JB’S SUNDAY DRIVE FINAL THOUGHTS
Three things stood out to me this weekend.
First, there is no unbeatable team in college football.
Ohio State proved that Saturday. Miami nearly reinforced the point. Indiana needed overtime.
Second, Georgia is beginning to look increasingly dangerous.
The Bulldogs aren’t always flashy, but they understand how to control football games. That’s a quality that becomes extremely important in November and December.
And finally, South Carolina might be one of the more intriguing teams in the SEC right now.
I’m not suggesting the Gamecocks are suddenly national championship contenders.
But I am suggesting that a South Carolina team with a healthy, confident LaNorris Sellers playing at his best is capable of making life miserable for just about anybody.
We’ve seen the disappointing version of this football team.
Saturday, we saw the version that had fans excited before the season began.
Now we find out whether that performance was another glimpse of what might have been or the beginning of something special.
That’s what makes college football so fascinating.
Just when you think you’ve figured everybody out, Saturday comes along and reminds you that you haven’t.
And that’s why we keep watching.
Until next Sunday, enjoy the ride.
