Week 9 | November 1, 2026

By James Baxter

Every Saturday, hundreds of college football players take the field hoping to make a difference. Some put up impressive numbers. Others make one play that changes the outcome of a game. And occasionally, an entire unit delivers a performance worthy of recognition.

I’ve always believed helmet stickers should mean something. They’re earned through effort, execution, toughness, and making plays when the game is on the line.

This week’s college football schedule gave us plenty of deserving candidates.

Here are my Helmet Sticker selections following Saturday’s action.

🏈 TRENT MOSLEY | WR | USC TROJANS

The Big-Game Playmaker

If you’re going to knock off the No. 2 team in America, somebody needs to make a statement.

Mosley wasted little time making his.

The USC receiver caught five passes for 101 yards and a touchdown as the Trojans stunned Ohio State 30-18.

His 69-yard touchdown reception helped establish the tone for a game USC controlled from the beginning.

Against an Ohio State defense loaded with talent, Mosley demonstrated why explosive playmakers can change the complexion of a football game in a matter of seconds.

Helmet Sticker Earned: Explosive production against an elite opponent.

🏈 BRYCE EDWARDS JR. | QB | NORTH CAROLINA

The Fearless Competitor

Sometimes a player deserves recognition even when his team loses.

Edwards completed 28 of 34 passes for 341 yards and four touchdowns against the nation’s No. 1 team.

North Carolina eventually fell to Miami 38-35, but Edwards gave the Hurricanes everything they could handle.

What impressed me wasn’t simply the yardage. It was the efficiency against a defense that knew Carolina needed its quarterback to produce.

You don’t complete more than 82 percent of your passes against the nation’s top-ranked team by accident.

That’s execution.

Helmet Sticker Earned: Outstanding quarterback performance against the nation’s No. 1 team.

🏈 MALACHI TONEY | WR | MIAMI

The Difference Maker

Miami escaped Chapel Hill with a 38-35 victory, and Toney played a significant role in keeping the Hurricanes undefeated.

The talented receiver finished with seven receptions for 75 yards and two touchdowns.

I’ve said before that the difference between a good receiver and a great one isn’t necessarily how many catches he makes.

It’s what those catches mean to the outcome.

Toney found the end zone twice in a game Miami couldn’t afford to lose.

That’s the kind of production championship contenders need from their playmakers.

Helmet Sticker Earned: Two touchdowns in a narrow road victory.

🏈 CHARLIE BECKER | WR | INDIANA

The Offensive Workhorse

Indiana needed overtime to escape Minnesota with a 23-16 victory.

Becker gave the Hoosiers a tremendous receiving performance, catching eight passes for 149 yards and a touchdown.

When a game becomes a struggle, quarterbacks need somebody they can trust to get open and make plays.

Becker provided exactly that.

His 149 receiving yards stand out, but the bigger story is that Indiana survived a game in which its offense faced considerable resistance.

Helmet Sticker Earned: A major receiving performance in an overtime victory.

🏈 NOAH MEYERS | WR | SYRACUSE

The Clutch Performer

There are touchdowns, and then there are touchdowns that people remember.

Meyers delivered the latter.

With just 17 seconds remaining, Meyers caught the touchdown pass that lifted Syracuse past No. 19 SMU, 30-27.

Those are the moments every player dreams about.

The game is hanging in the balance. Everybody in the stadium understands what’s at stake. One play separates victory from defeat.

Meyers delivered.

Helmet Sticker Earned: Game-winning touchdown against a nationally ranked opponent.

🏈 MAX CUTFORTH | QB | BOISE STATE

The Fourth-Quarter Fighter

Boise State found itself in a battle with Texas State that threatened to derail its season.

Cutforth responded by throwing three fourth-quarter touchdown passes as the Broncos escaped with a 46-45 victory.

Quarterbacking isn’t always pretty.

Sometimes you’re going to have to throw your team back into a football game.

I’ve coached enough quarterbacks to appreciate the mental toughness required to keep attacking when things aren’t going your way.

Cutforth showed that kind of resolve.

Helmet Sticker Earned: Three fourth-quarter touchdown passes in a one-point victory.

🐓 GAMECOCK HELMET STICKERS

🏈 SOUTH CAROLINA DEFENSIVE FRONT

The Goal-Line Warriors

South Carolina’s 42-25 victory over Oklahoma featured plenty of moments worth celebrating, but I’m giving one of my Helmet Stickers to the Gamecock defensive front.

That final goal-line stand deserves recognition.

There is something fundamentally different about playing defense when the offense is knocking on the door.

There’s no more field to defend. No room for mistakes. No opportunity to surrender another few yards and regroup.

You either win the line of scrimmage or you don’t.

South Carolina answered the challenge.

As a former coach, I appreciate that kind of effort because goal-line defense is about leverage, discipline, toughness, and eleven players accepting responsibility for their assignments.

The Gamecocks finished the job.

Helmet Sticker Earned: Defensive toughness and a final goal-line stand against Oklahoma.

🏆 SPECIAL RECOGNITION

IOWA DEFENSE

The Shutout Award

Iowa didn’t just beat No. 25 Wisconsin.

The Hawkeyes shut out the Badgers 30-0.

In today’s college football, where offensive coordinators spread the field and quarterbacks are throwing the ball all over the place, pitching a shutout against a ranked opponent deserves attention.

Iowa’s defense earns a collective Helmet Sticker for making sure Wisconsin never crossed the goal line or put points on the scoreboard.

USC TROJANS

The Statement Award

The biggest victory of the weekend belongs to Southern California.

Beating No. 2 Ohio State 30-18 is impressive enough.

Doing it while controlling the game from the opening stages sends a message to the rest of the country.

The Trojans didn’t need a miracle finish.

They went out and beat one of the nation’s best teams.

That deserves recognition.

JB’S FINAL THOUGHT

I’ve handed out thousands of helmet stickers during my years coaching football, and I always wanted the players to understand something.

A helmet sticker isn’t a participation trophy.

It’s recognition for doing something that helps your football team win.

Sometimes that’s a quarterback throwing four touchdown passes. Sometimes it’s a receiver making the biggest catch of his career.

And sometimes it’s a defensive lineman holding his ground on fourth-and-goal when everybody in the stadium knows the football is coming straight at him.

Football is the ultimate team sport, but within every team victory are individual efforts that deserve to be recognized.

Those are the players I want to celebrate with Helmet Stickers.

Congratulations to this week’s recipients. You’ve earned them.
